How do I install SurfGem after I've downloaded it?

A: To install SurfGem 3.3, please follow the steps below:

  • Run Windows File Explorer and go to the folder where you saved your downloaded SurfGem file to.
  • Double click on the application exe file named, surfgm33.exe,
  • Follow the on screen instructions.

    The installation program will create a folder according to your specification or will install to the default "Program files" folder. It will also create a program group in your Start menu, and place the application icon on your desktop so you can easily access SurfGem.

    Do I need to reboot my computer after installing SurfGem?

    A: You don't need to reboot your computer after installing SurfGem. It doesn't require it.

    Can I move the SurfGem application folder, after installation, to a different location?

    A: No, it is not a good idea to move any applications folder from it's installed place. If you move the SurfGem folder manually then the "Add/Remove programs" list in your control panel is not updated.

    How do I Uninstall SurfGem?

    A: To uninstall SurfGem please follow the steps below:

  • Click on the START button on your Windows Taskbar.
  • Select the SETTINGS option.
  • Select the CONTROL PANEL.
  • When the control panel has opened, double click on Add/Remove Programs.

    In the listing of programs that can be uninstalled, you will find an item in the listing for "SurfGem". Select it.

    Click on the Add/Remove button and follow the instructions on screen.

    Do I need to reboot my computer after uninstalling SurfGem?

    A: You don't need to reboot your computer after uninstalling SurfGem. It doesn't require it.

    When I uninstall SurfGem, what happens to my data file that I created with SurfGem?

    A: When you have completed the uninstall operation it will only uninstall the SurfGem application. Any data files you created will be left intact for you to consider in case you may need to use them again. Data files contain your bookmarks you have created. If you do not need them just locate the folder where you saved your SurfGem files and delete them manually.

    Does SurfGem clean up the Registry after uninstalling?

    A: You will find that SurfGem will only uninstall the application files. It will leave the registry entries that contains your user preferences, so that when you re-install your preferences are retained.

    Do I need to uninstall a previous version of SurfGem before installing another?

    A: We strongly advise you to first Uninstall any previous versions of SurfGem before installing the latest version. By uninstalling SurfGem the uninstall process doesn't remove any of your data files that were created by yourself. It only removes the application related data from the installed folder.

    Will SurfGem run on Windows XP?

    A: Yes. We experienced no problems running on our test version of Windows XP Professional.

    Will SurfGem run on Linux?

    A: No, not at the moment. It is a future thought.

    Will SurfGem run on Windows CE?

    A: No, not at the moment. It is a future thought.

    Will SurfGem run on a Pocket PC or Palm Top?

    A: No, not at the moment. It is a future thought.

    Will SurfGem run on Macintosh?

    A: No, not at the moment.

    Will SurfGem run on BeOS?

    A: No, not at the moment.

    Exactly what operating system will SurfGem run on?

    A: SurfGem will run on Window 95, 98, ME, NT5, 2000 and XP.

    Can I open older SurfGem files in the latest version?

    A: The registered version can open any older versions. However, if you save the file under a new version then you will not be able to open the data file in any older versions of SurfGem.

    Is SurfGem network compatible?

    A: You are able to open data files from across a network, however, there's no file locking so make sure that the file is only open by one user at a time. If two users try to save the same file, then only the last user to save will be commited.

    Can I run more than one copy of SurfGem at the same time?

    A: Yes. Each with it's own individual files. Just make sure that the file you're editing isn't the same data file in both running copies.

    Does SurfGem have any backup precautions to safe guard my data?

    A: SurfGem can automatically create a .bak file when you save. This bak file is just your data file like it was just before you saved. When you need to reclaim your backup file, use File Explorer and rename the MYFILE.bak to MYFILE.gbf, overwriting your data file. SurfGem, can also automatically save your data file every x minutes.

    What's the maximum amount of data that SurfGem will hold?

    A: It is practically unlimited. If you have the hard disk space, then SurfGem can hold millions of items.

    If I buy SurfGem, what version upgrades do I get free?

    A: If you buy version 3.3, then you will receive all version upgrades for version 3.x free of charge. This means you get 3.4, 3.5 etc up to but not including 4.0.

    What is your upgrade pricing policy?

    A: To upgrade from version 2.x to version 3 for registered users will be a generous discount on the price of version 3.

    I need a particular feature that SurfGem doesn't have, can you include it?

    A: If you need something but SurfGem can't do it, then write in and let us know. If we can implement the idea and we think other users will also benefit, then it will be realized in a future update.
