Settings and Preferences
Settings and Preferences in the Tools menu lets you set a range of options to control various TexNotes Pro features.

Startup |
The following options and choices are available in the Startup tab:
Check Load at startup to have TexNotes Pro start automatically with Windows. When Start with the last opened file is checked, TexNotes Pro automatically starts with the last *.tex file you had open. If Start minimized is checked, TexNotes Pro automatically minimizes to the Task Bar as soon as it's open. Check Show Splash to view the TexNotes Pro splash screen at startup. Check Show Layout Chooser to have this dialog box displayed during startup. |

General |
These options are available from the General tab:
Uncheck Show mouse tooltips to disable the short text strings normally displayed as the cursor is moved over buttons. If you don't have any of the Confirmations checked, no confirmatory message box is shown before launching a Hyperlink, the telephone dialer, or a file in new window. Auto Show Property Tabs allows you to automatically display or suppress the Shape, Painting and/or Table tabs in the Tools panel.
The Minimizing tab controls what happens when you click the Windows' Minimize
button:
Minimize to the taskbar is the normal default option. The alternative minimizes the main TexNotes Pro window to the system tray. Check Save current file when minimized to have your current file automatically saved whenever TexNotes Pro is minimized. Minimize instead of closing means that whenever you click the Windows' Close button, TexNotes Pro is minimized in preference to being closed. |
The Passwords tab controls exactly when previously-set passwords are asked for:
You can choose whether to Only ask for password once per session or else to Always ask for a password, if needed. Passwords are set using Set or Change File Password from the File menu. |
The Hotkey tab lets you set a system-wide hotkey to display or minimize TexNotes Pro. The hotkey you set must actually be a combination of keys, like [Left Arrow] + [D] or [Ctrl] + [M] for example. To prevent conflicts, avoid setting key combinations that are used in other applications.
Document Tabs |
The Document Tabs tab allows you to control the behavior of the document tabs which are normally displayed just above the StatusBar Tools near the bottom of the TexNotes Pro window:

If you have Keep Document Tabs checked, whenever you reopen a TexNotes Pro file it re-displays the same tabs that were showing when the file was closed. Note that the default state for this extremely useful option is unchecked. Normally, each document tab is automatically sized so that it clearly shows the item's Outline name. This option allows you to change this, by forcing each tab to have a Custom Width. |
Notice that as well as setting the Custom Tab Width in pixels, you can also set the Maximum number of tabs permitted. |
If you are using TexNotes Pro in single-window mode, and have Keep Document Tabs checked, when you reopen another file you'll see that the tabs from the first file continue to be displayed. If you then click one of these tabs, the second file is automatically closed (you are prompted to save if you have made changes), and the first file automatically opened to display the tabbed Note that was clicked. This can be extremely useful when you are copying between documents, or comparing multiple documents.
Notes |
These options are available from the Notes tab:
You can choose whether to keep images that you paste in their Original Format, or have them automatically converted to JPG format (recommended). If you choose Convert to JPG, you can set the Compression Quality in the range 01% - 100% (best). Around 70% is normally a good compromise between quality and size. It is usually best to check Progressive Encoding to avoid quality deterioration. The information about changing the format of new Notes is only of interest to users who upgrade to the latest version of TexNotes Pro from older versions. |
Remember that, by default, Hyperlink recognition is turned on. This means that if you type a hyperlink, TexNotes Pro will recognize it and format it as a hyperlink. If you switch off auto detection, then TexNotes Pro will not format URLs or emails automatically. You can control this by toggling Auto-detect Hyperlinks and URLS from the Insert menu.
These options are available from the Hyperlinks tab:
Auto mark any URLs and Emails is concerned with how hyperlinks are indicated in the text. It does not affect Hyperlink recognition. You can choose a Default hyperlink style font and color, and define what kind of address is to be marked as a Hyperlink, Check Auto Refresh Hyperlinks List to have the list constantly updated. It is not normally necessary to check this. You can access the list by clicking the down-arrow under Hyperlink Target in the Insert Hyperlink dialog box. You can also chose the Launch Hyperlinks Method. In most circumstances you'll find the normal default [Ctrl]+[Left click] to be the best option |
See Hyperlinks for more information.
Outline |
These options are available from the Notes tab:
You can control how Outline Items are placed when they are pasted with these self-explanatory options. The Naming Format is also perfectly straightforward. If you do not completely understand these naming conventions, checkout Help on Format Variables which includes several examples, and experiment in a scrap document. |
Files and Folders |
The following options are available from the Notes tab:
Set the Maximum number of last opened files that TexNotes Pro "remembers", and displays in the Open and Reopen dialogs. Select whether TexNotes Pro opens files in a new window, or the current window, when you double-click a file in Explorer. Whichever you choose, a confirmatory window is always displayed before the file is opened. You can select a folder for TexNotes Pro to use when saving files, and the first folder to look in when attempting to Open a file. Unless you have some other application that uses *.tex files, like Latex for example, it is usually good practice to Associate TEX files with TexNotes Pro. Click the button to set this association. |
Saving |
These options are available from the Saving tab:
Select Create a backup file to always have a backup of the current file automatically created. You can also choose in which folder to store the backup. If you wish, you can have TexNotes Pro automatically save the current file at a specified interval. Remember, that if you do this, any errors are also automatically saved. |
The Exiting tab allows you to specify what happens to the current document when you close TexNotes Pro:
The first two options effectively allow you to choose whether or not you are prompted before the current document is saved when you close TexNotes Pro. Do not ask and do not save document on exit means that TexNotes Pro is immediately closed, and the current document is not saved. |
