Search

Two facilities are provided to locate text and objects within TexNotes Pro files.

Try Quick Search first. Select Show Quick Search from the Search menu to activate the toolbar, if necessary. Type in the word/s to look for, and click one of the Search buttons to find the first match, or the next match.

The Quick Search drop-down menu allows you to set some parameters, and a History of Search Terms is also provided so that your terms are remembered.

Advanced Search

For more extensive and controlled searches, use Advanced Search.

When you select this, a new panel automatically opens in the Navigator. Type in the word/s to search for, and then select appropriate options below the search input box.

Are you going to search Notes, Images, Notebooks, Drawings, or all of them? Check as needed.

The History of Search Terms drop-down remembers recently-used terms. You can click any term in the list to have it re-entered without typing. A Clear Search History option is included.

Options
Click this to show or suppress display of Search Options. Do you want to search for the exact phrase, include all the words but not as an exact phrase, or search for the occurrence of any of the words entered in the search box? The default is Exact Phrase. Change this to All Words or Any Words to increase the search result count. You may need to use Case Sensitive sometimes, but it's normally best to leave this unchecked. If it is checked, the search term CAPITAL will not find any occurrences of capital.

Items
Click this to show or suppress display of Search Items. This allows you to specify a particular Notebook or Note to search, or All Items. If you select Specific Item, a dialog box is displayed so you can choose exactly which items will be searched.

Fields
Click this to show or suppress display of Search Fields. These include Name, Author, Comments and Keywords, but are only useful if these fields actually contain data. This data is entered (manually, or automatically captured) into the Item Header. Almost all searches have Content of Note checked.

Click to start the search.

All search Results are displayed in the bottom half of the search panel. When more than one result is returned, double-click any of the results to locate the exact findings within a document.

Click the Show drop-down arrow to reveal the following options which allow you to control what's displayed in the Search panel, and how the Results are presented.

Search Panel Toolbar Buttons

The Search Panel toolbar buttons provide several useful functions.

Click  to clear the Search For Text box and the Results, so you can start a new search.

Use the Previous and Next buttons to step through and view the Results of your search.
First and Last buttons are also provided which are particularly useful when the result list is long.

The button selects all the current search Results, and marks the Notes they reference in Outline. It's really neat! After you've clicked this button, click the Outline tab and you'll see that each referenced Note is highlighted.

Search and Replace

You'll find TexNotes Pro's Search and Replace facility in the main Search menu.

Type in the text to be replaced in the Find what box.
Type the text to use as the substitute in the Replace with box.

You'll notice that you can also control whether case is taken into account, and/or whether the complete string is matched, or only part of it.

Click Replace to have the substitution performed. (The buttons are activated when you've typed in entries.)

Be careful when using Replace All. Every occurrence of the string typed into the Find What box in the current Note is changed, which can sometimes produce unwanted results. Try clicking Undo in the Edit menu to recover, if this happens to you. (You may have to click this several times.)

To avoid this problem, try using Find Text in Note first. This at least shows you exactly what TexNotes Pro will find, although it obviously doesn't show the effect of the substitution.

Tips

When entering text or editing a Note, you can use the Item Header to add Author, Comments, Keywords and so on, for each Note. You can then use these Fields effectively when searching

If nothing appears to happen when you click Find, make sure Content of Note is checked in Search Fields.
