Hyperlinks

Some situations make hyperlinks a necessity. You may want to insert a URL address in a Note for future reference, or to support the current document. TexNotes Pro lets you quickly insert any URL or email address into a Note, by either copy/paste or dragging it to the current cursor position.

Here, for example, is a small reference table for some online news sources. Each link is clickable.

Ctrl-click  Links

You must [Ctrl+LeftClick]  to launch links, unlike the single click used by most web browsers. This is because you can edit text in TexNotes Pro, including the hyperlinks. This is, of course, normal practice within HTML editing applications like FrontPage and DreamWeaver.

However, GemX has taken this into account and provides some extra options to launch hyperlinks. You can find these options in Settings and Preferences in the Tools menu.

Users have full control over how to handle hyperlinks. You can tell TexNotes Pro to Auto mark any URLs and Emails, or suppress this.

Notice you can also choose a Default hyperlink style font and color, define what kind of address is to be marked as a Hyperlink, and chose the Launch Hyperlinks Method.

You should also check out the Insert menu. There you'll find some quick options such as switching on and off auto detection, forcing URLs and Email hyperlinks recognition , and clearing all hyperlinks within the current Note.

Hyperlink Recognition

By default, Hyperlink recognition is turned on. This means that if you type a hyperlink, TexNotes Pro will recognize it and format it as a hyperlink. You can prefix it with or without http.
As http://www.gemx.com or http://gemx.com or http://www.gemx.com/texnotespro.php or www.gemx.com, but not as gemx.com.

Similar procedures apply to emails, for example, me@myxyztrdomain.org. For TexNotes Pro to recognize email addresses, the entry must contain @ (at) sign, dot, and no space.

It is true that you can easily fool TexNotes Pro by typing a non existing domain extension such as me@shdgdh.444

Please don't forget that auto detection only works if it's active. If you switch off auto detection, then TexNotes Pro will not format URLs or emails automatically. You can control this by toggling Auto-detect Hyperlinks and URLS from the Insert menu.

Not all URLs and emails may be recognized by TexNotes Pro when dragged, pasted or typed in.

Other ways of inserting Hyperlinks

Other ways of inserting Hyperlinks can be found by using Hyperlink on the Insert menu, or the Hyperlink button on the toolbar at the bottom of the canvas area.

When you open the Hyperlinks dialog box, you'll see some different linking options. In addition to URLs and Email Addresses, you can also insert a TexNotes Item, Dialer Number, and Local File hyperlinks.

TexNotes Item

This hyperlink type appears many times in this Rough Guide, because it's extremely useful when working with large TexNotes Pro files. For example, to link a section describing Hyperlinks to contrasting information about Anchors.
From the Choose an Item dialog box, locate the Anchors Note, select it and click OK in both dialog boxes.

If you hold the [Ctrl] key down and move the cursor over the hyperlinked Anchor above, the cursor changes into a hand symbol to indicate that it's a clickable hyperlink. Click the hyperlink to jump to the Anchors Note.

You can customize your hyperlink text color in both states: Normal and Active.

Hyperlink Target

Sometimes, you may need a particular word to be linked to a URL or Email address without putting the full path in the text. For example, this word GemX is linked to our web site.

To achieve this, open the Item Hyperlink dialog box, click Internet Web URL, and complete the Hyperlink Target edit box by typing the full GemX URL.

The same procedures apply when linking Email addresses to a word or phrase.

Dialer Number

You can use the same procedure when linking to a Dialer Number (telephone number).

Local File

When you click Local File, a standard Windows Open File dialog box is displayed so you can select a file.

Advanced

This effectively combines TexNotes Item and Local File. Type the exact target address in the Hyperlink Target edit box rather than browsing. You can apply the usual formatting options to entries pasted into the edit box.

Moving Hyperlinks

When you move TexNotes Pro items containing hyperlinks around in Navigator Outline, any hyperlinks are preserved if you do not delete the target. But if you link to an external file and move or delete this file, the hyperlink is lost.

Launch Hyperlink

When you move the cursor over a valid URL, a tooltip like this is displayed . This tooltip  also shows the target URL. (This obviously assumes you are using the default Launch Hyperlinks Method as described above.)

When you subsequently press [Ctrl+LeftClick], your system's default browser is automatically launched. In case of difficulty, first check your firewall settings and make sure you have permitted TexNotes Pro to access the Internet.

Insert Image from URL

If you have a URL that links to an image, like the one shown below, you can use Insert Image from URL to have the image placed at the current cursor position in your document.

http://www.gemx.com/art/home/free_ebook_reader.jpg

When you select this option, the following dialog box is displayed:

Paste, or type, the URL into the box and click Start Download.

If the URL is valid, and your Internet connection is in good working order, the image is immediately downloaded and inserted into your document.

If the URL is invalid, no action is taken, and no warning message is displayed.

If your Internet connection is not working, an attempt to download the image is made, but the process quickly times out.

Remember that the image is inserted at the current cursor position. In practice, however, if the image isn't placed where you want, simply cut it, and then paste it into the correct position.

If, when you are browsing the Internet, you find an image you wish to download into a Note, most browsers provide a Copy Image Location facility (usually on the right-click menu). You can use this to copy the URL to the Windows clipboard, and then paste it into the dialog box shown above to download it.

Download Files from Selected Hyperlinks

Before clicking on this item in the Insert menu, select a valid URL by dragging the cursor over it. You can select multiple URLs, but they must appear consecutively in the text, like this:

http://www.gemx.com/art/press/large_box_covers/do_organizer_logo_1.png

http://www.gemx.com/art/press/large_box_covers/texnotes_pro_box_shot.png

If you have any difficulty in getting this to work, make sure you have Auto mark any URLs and Emails switched on in Settings and Preferences (and see above). You should also check any firewall settings, and make sure you have permitted TexNotes Pro to access the Internet.

When you've selected a URL and clicked Download Files from Selected Hyperlinks, a dialog box similar to the following is displayed:

Click the Start Download button to begin downloading. The downloaded image used in this example is shown at the very end of this Note.

If the URL is invalid, no action is taken, and no warning message is displayed. If your Internet connection is not working, an attempt to download the image is made, but the process quickly times out.

The text in the dialog box above is now outdated.
The image is not placed in the current document, but instead downloaded to C:\Program Files\GemX\TexNotesPro\downloadcache (by default). From there you can obviously copy and paste it into the current document, or move it wherever you wish.

Tip

Auto detected URLs are formatted according to your preferences in Settings/Hyperlinks. Normally, the default settings are best.
